Beaches in South Africa

There are many beaches in South Africa, below is a list of some of the most popular ones.

Eastern Cape


Port St John's, Wild Coast: Port St John's is an exquisite and pristine stretch of tropical coastline, which can be used for lazing around and lovely swimming in the lagoon

Port Elizabeth: Port Elizabeth offers a variety of beaches from the penguin beaches which are sheltered by Algoa Bay, to Kings Beach, a local favorite and Humewood Beach. The snake park and Oceanarium can be found near to Humewood Beach.

East London: East London provides a diversity of beaches. Beaches consisting of sand dunes, rock outcrops and ocean views. Good swimming can be done at Orient Beach whereby great views and exploring can be found at the black rocks of Eastern Beach. Nahoon Beach and Gonubie Beach are great for long romantic walks

Jeffrey’s Bay, St Francis (Surfing): Jeffrey's Bay, the soul of South African surfing which is also home to the Billabong Pro held each July, has been dubbed the surf Mecca of SA. Other surf areas in close proximity are Cape St Francis and Port Elizabeth, communally known as Jay Bay by local surfers. Surfers from around the Globe come here to experience the awesome waves.

KwaZulu Natal


Cape Vidal, Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park: The beach at Cape Vidal can be described as the premium of all beaches with its many rock pools and long stretch of snow-white sand and the sight of whales in October. A Beach that should not be missed. The St Lucia Wetlands Park is also a World Heritage Site.

Umhlanga Rocks: Umhlanga Rocks, which becomes busy during the school holidays, offers fun for the entire family. This is the destination of choice for ideal family holiday. There is swimming, surfing, sea kayaking as well as body boarding. There are also numerous rock pools and warm tidal pools


South Beach, Durban
: South Beach, a multiple Blue Flag winner, is an unspoiled place loved by locals and tourists. This beach is ideal for swimming and surfing, as it is sheltered from the powerful westerly winds and large waves by the Bluff. Along the beachfront beadwork, baskets, woodwork and handicrafts are sold by the many vendors. At the end of the beach Africa's biggest marine theme park can be found-Ushaka Marine World.

Margate, South Coast: Margate is a lively beach full of young people offering a variety of restaurants, pubs, shops and lots of outdoor fun.

Bay of Plenty, New Pier, Cave Rock (Surfing) : Bay of Plenty known for its surfing can sometimes become crowded, with between 60 and 100 surfers battling it out on the waves, while New Pier puts up a consistent wave and at its best is incredibly fast and hollow. However Cave Rock is arguably the best big wave spot in Durban

Western Cape


Camps Bay: Camps Bay Beach is often used for film shoots and is full of beautiful people, trendy bars and restaurants and offers the most fantastic views of Lion's Head and the Twelve Apostles.

Clifton: Clifton is known as millionaires’ mile. A favourite amongst models, film crew and fashion magazines. Due to its enormous granite boulders Clifton is divided into four sandy beaches, each beach catering for different crowds.

Llandudno: Llandudno is a beautiful secluded beach with some good surfing conditions, it also offers beautiful views and fabulous sunsets

Bloubergstrand:Bloubergstrand offers spectacular picturesque views of Cape Town's Table Mountain and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for over 20 years, Robben Island is also a World Heritage Site. Restaurants as well as other entertainment can be found near the beach.

Boulders Beach:Boulders Beach, is part of the Table Mountain National Park, it is also a sanctuary for the jackass (African) penguins. A small entrance fee for visitors maintains the beach.

Hermanus:Hermanus, during spring, is known as the best land-based whale-watching site in the world. Every year the town holds a Whale Festival to mark the annual whale migration.
